Youtube clicks vs. Piwik page impressions: Large differences

We are running an ad campaign on youtube creating clicks for a website that we track with Piwik. However, youtube is reporting up to 3 times as many clicks as Piwik is showing as page impressions on a day-to-day basis. Any ideas what the problem might be?

  • The campaign has been running for more than 7 days now and the effect is fairly stable.
  • We are running Piwk 2.4.0.
  • We have also considered other referrers like tubemogul and s.ytimg.com, but still the numbers don’t mactch at all.
  • We have tried to set a Piwik campaign parameter, but unfortunately that is conflicting with a parameter we need for the e-commerce solution on the tracked website, so we cannot analyze the campaign using Piwik campaign parameters.

Why does it conflict? it would be recommended to use campaign tracking when tracking campaigns, as the “referrer information” can be sometimes lost depending on user configurations. See: http://piwik.org/docs/tracking-campaigns-url-builder/
