Wikipedia as referrer

Hi everyone,

I noticed something rather unusual. Dunno if it’s a bug or not, but it’s quite disturbing so I share it here.

Wikipedia has been a continuous referrer to our website for more than a year. Not a big one (5 to 10 visits / day) but a high-quality one, that we follow carefully. Problem: For a month now, the counter is blocked at 0.
The hyperlinks are still in Wikipedia so the problem does not come from there. So I am wondering if there is a problem with piwik ?

Thanks for your attention !

Best,
Jean

Hi Jean,

can you try upgrade to 2.14.0. In a few days if you still have issues, please

  1. enable debug for tracker: Tracking HTTP API: API Reference - Matomo Analytics (formerly Piwik Analytics) - Developer Docs - v3
  2. write here a wikipedia page with a link to your website (and which link it is)

I could take a look at it

Hi,

I have got the same problem with version 2.14.3. I followed a link from Wikipedia; in the dashbord my action is listed as “direct entry”; the same issue exists with links from Wikimedia Commons.
Is there anything I can do to change the situation?

Best regards,
Musdok

Could it be this ?

As of 2015 wikipedia uses https for all connections

[quote]To ensure that Wikipedia users can share in the world’s knowledge more securely, the Wikimedia Foundation is implementing HTTPS, to encrypt all traffic on Wikimedia sites. […]

Linking from secure connections to non-https sites will prevent the referrer from being transmitted.

Thank you! Sounds like that is the explanation. Looks like we have to go back to good old user surveys…
