Upcoming changes in Google’s HTTP Referrer

Hi All,

Not sure if this is on the Piwik teams radar (as this is new). I did not see a ticket or forum discussion, but Google will be making (once again) changes in how Google Searches show in our Analytics, by using the referrer meta tag. The tag will let it override the real referrer that would go out, even what’s left of that referrer after search terms have been stripped. This time the impact is only Google Chrome (and soon other browsers.). Changes will begin in April.

More Details:

Just wanted to give heads up to the team, and to users if they see funky results before a change is implemented…

Thanks for the head up, that was useful! This is now fixed in trunk: Handle new Google search SSL format, changing April 1st · Issue #3062 · matomo-org/matomo · GitHub

Thanks for the update. However, there are more than 600 changes made on Google everyday.

Jim you are confusing Google’s Algorithm changes to how your site is displayed in SERPs and how Google Search referers work in Analytics. They make Analytics changes very rarely. This directly impacts how the results are displayed in everyone’s Piwik install.

Thanks for making the change!
