How does Piwik count unique visitors?
Is 1 unique visitor = 1 unique IP-address?

To me … Yes, and you would see pageview count which is how many page a unique visitor viewed.
No. Piwki uses cookies. If the browser doesn’t accept Cookies, it falls back to IP Address/Browser/OS.
IP addresses are not reliable - users from AOL for example will dynamically change IP address during a visit.
Sorry to dredge up an old message, but it’s exactly what we want to know.
we have imported some apache logs and looking at the year
(http://webstats/piwik/index.php?module=CoreHome&action=index&date=2012-05-03&period=year&idSite=1#module=VisitsSummary&action=index&date=2012-05-03&period=year&idSite=1&idDashboard=1)
we see that we have more visitors than visits.
4568 visits, 5673 unique visitors
we don’t plan to use the javascript tracking info, so the algorythm or our knowledge needs to be addressed.
we have added “enable_processing_unique_visitors_year_and_range = 1”, was there something to do after this ? eg reimport the logs ?

Have you used the “Log Analytics” script to import logs? try deleting all table piwik_archive_* and run archive.php again ?

have found corrupted entries.

after cleaning the files, will reimporting the files, clear the previous data or is there something i should do to clear the previous data ?
