Where can I find un-obfuscated versions of the javascript files used for tracking (those would help auditing the data conenction)?

js/piwik.js contains the not-minified source file with comments.

A follow-up: are all the container_xXxXx*.js -files machine -generated (and do they contain tag data), or is there a version that would be more easily audited?

Hi,

The container_* files are automatically generated and minified, but I think that if your Matomo instance is in development mode, the minification is skipped and the readable file is saved.
