Track funnel steps via server-side or javascript

We’re experimenting with goals/funnels. It seems that currently, the only way to track a completed step is via a unique url. Sometimes we need more than that, for example when posting a form to the same url, or when starting from multiple landing pages (meaning the first step can be different urls).

Neither the PHP client, nor the javascript API mentions anything about this. Is this something you’re working on?
