Reported visitors inexplicibly reduced

Hi all! We have set up matomo to track visitors on our websites. The version we are using is 4.3.1. In September 2025, the visitor count being reported daily started showing a drop of about 10%. We did some digging but couldn’t find anything at our end that might have caused a sudden drop of 10%. It has been the same since then. Reaching out to the community to see what could have happened. Was it something in matomo that could have caused it?

That’s quite an old version of Matomo and seeing how you wouldn’t have upgraded across that period I don’t think it could be anything related to Matomo itself. I know from time-to-time Google updates search and some sites get pushed to the bottom. Are you finding the drop is across the board or is it isolated to organic?

Our setup does not have traffic from Google. We can access only after connecting to VPN. The drop is across the board.

Hi, we faced something very similar earlier. In our case it wasn’t Matomo itself, but a mix of external factors — mainly traffic source changes and stricter browser privacy / ad-blockers.
Also worth double-checking if any consent/banner changes, JS loading order, or CDN/caching updates happened around that time.

If the drop is consistent across all sites, I’d lean more towards traffic quality/source changes rather than a Matomo bug.
