Question about matomo license

So in regards to licensing. If read and heard from the support as well, if I purchase one matomo license, I can use it on up to 2 instance, one production and one testing/development etc.

My questions are, what is considered an instance here and what are the limits?

For example, I use hetzner server to host matomo, if I use server 1 and create a website and host matomo there, it is counted as one instance, right?

What if I create another server, then create another website there and host matomo on that website, is that considered now 2 instances or is it counted as 1 instance on that particular server e.g. one server has 1 instance, the other server has another instance, and they don’t know about each other, or both will be counted in this case as 2 instances?

Furthermore, what are the limitations of the testing/staging/development instance?

If I run more traffic to the testing instance to test stuff and I run 10k, 100k, 500k, 1m visits, to see if whatever I’m testing is going to break or not, is that going to work?

Above is for the scenario where I have 2 instance, 1 production and 1 testing, and the production runs normally gets a lot of traffic, but I’m testing something on the testing instance, and I run heavy traffic, is everything going to work normal? Or are there limitations?

Trying to understand your licenses and what can be don’t and what can’t be done…

Didn’t find answers to any of the questions above so asking here.

If anyone can help me out I will appreciate it.

Hi @fahir
I think that only @innocraft can answer licensing questions…

HI @fahir. To clarify this easily, 2 matomo instance means you have 2 Matomo URLs. For example:

matomoproduction.hetzner.com
matomostaging.hetzner.com

Once you purchase a license, you can install it in both of your Matomo instance.

I hope this clarify things. If you have further questions, please let us know.
