I’m new to Matomo, previously having used Omniture.
Are there any equivalents to Omnibug so that I can see from Chrome what is happening with Matomo when I load a page? To make sure events are firing etc and with the correct data?

I once tried to write such an extension, but gave up.
But you can simply check the network tab of your browsers developer tools. The matomo.php/piwik.php request will have the data that is sent to Matomo.
