Matomo Wordpress plugin works on sites hosted everywhere but does not work for sites at hostgator

I have a self hosted install of Matomo.

When I install the Wordpress plugin on any of my sites hosted at Hostgator I get:
“WP-Matomo 1.0.28 was not able to connect to Matomo using your configuration.” and the
BUT - the stats are registering and available at the dashboard of Matomo.

When I install the Wordpress plugin on sites not at hostgator (other server locations) it works without problem.
