Issue with WhiteLabel and Tag Manager variables

I think I discovered a bug in Matomo Tag Manager.

Steps:

  • I added variables type “Matomo Configuration”

  • I used “Matomo Configuration” and just added details to the name, e.g. variable name is “Matomo Configuration Country XY”, and the Matomo idSite of the variable is 2

  • I created trigger and tag, and I selected variable “Matomo Configuration Country XY” in “Configure what this tag should do”

Everything working fine as expected until I went to System/General settings:

  • I added our company name as WhiteLabel, let’s say “ABC”

  • then I discovered in Tag Manager: all variables starting with “Matomo Configuration” changed to “ABC Configuration”, e.g. “ABC Configuration Country XY”

  • in the tags, all variable names have been correctly updated to “ABC Configuration Country XY”

  • But the tags did not deliver tracking data any longer to the ID defined in the variable

After removing the company’s name in the WhiteLabel field, everthings ran as before. The problem does not occur when I manually change the variable name, but only in conjunction with the white label.

Has anyone else noticed similar problems?

We are using 5.14.0 on premise.

Hi Thorsten,

I can explain part of what you’re seeing. The renaming is actually expected behaviour: the White Label setting replaces the word “Matomo” with your brand name everywhere in the UI, and that includes the names of your Tag Manager variables. That’s purely cosmetic though — the variables keep their internal IDs, so any tag referencing them still points at the same variable. The rename alone shouldn’t stop any data from being tracked.

The fact that tracking actually stopped is the suspicious part, and I’d treat it as a separate issue from the rename itself. A few things I’d check in your shoes:

  • Make sure the container was republished after the White Label change, and test in Preview/Debug mode. A stale published container is the most common reason data suddenly stops flowing.
  • Open the renamed variable and confirm the Site ID and other values are still exactly as before.
  • If you have any Custom HTML tags that insert the variable by name ({{ … }}), check those references — the automatic rename changes the display name, so anything referencing the old name as plain text could silently break.
  • In the browser network tab, check whether requests to matomo.php are still being sent at all, and which Site ID they carry.

Since removing the White Label name restored tracking for you, it would be interesting to re-apply it step by step and find the exact point where data stops. If you can reproduce it consistently, that’s a genuine bug report the team would want.

Let us know what you find.

Could you share a small, anonymised example of the configuration before and after changing the WhiteLabel name? One variable and its linked tag should be enough. Seeing exactly what changes would make this easier to reproduce.
