How is list of countries calculated, whats the total?

In matomo dashboard for visitors I wanted to see from how many countries our visitors are.

Unfortunately i dont see any further description and would love to know whats the total number of this list.

There are 193, 195, 237, 245, 248, or 253 countries in the world, depending on definition. So which one is Matomo using?

Matomo identifies visitor locations using GeoIP databases, which map IP addresses to countries. I’d say the number of countries recognized by matomo depends on the specific GeoIP database in use.
