How do I track downloads separately from regular page views?

Hi Team, I’m setting up Matomo for a website here and I’m trying to understand the best way to track PDF and other file downloads separately from normal page views.

Is download tracking enabled by default or do I need to add any extra configuration to the tracking code?

Also is there a way to see which downloads are getting the most interactions in the Matomo reports?

If the link to the pdf goes to another page that does not have the tracker it won’t be tracked as a download. If it is downloaded from the currently tracked page, it should appear in downloads.
