GeoLocation: GeoLiteCity.dat vs GeoLite2-City.mmdb

When I visited MaxMind for the GeoLite Free DB I read it is a legacy DB “GeoLite Legacy Downloadable Databases”. They point to GeoLite2 Free Downloadable Databases « MaxMind Developer Site where I can download the GeoLite2-City.mmdb

Does Piwik support the latter? If yes, should I rename it GeoLiteCity.dat ?

no, they do not support the newer version with .mmdb extension… you need to download the .dat… there is a ticket asking for this feature, you can get updates on the issue here
