Disable custom ranges in "compare to" feature

We have disabled the “date range” option in the period selection in Matomo via config.
With the new “compare to” feature is it possible to enter a custom range.

Entering a range leads to an error:
“The period ‘range’ is not supported. Try any of the following instead: day, week, month, year”

How can we solve this problem (without enabling the “date range” option)?

Would it be fixed with Fixes some comparison issues by sgiehl · Pull Request #15583 · matomo-org/matomo · GitHub?

This has nothing to do with the linked PR.

But you are right that this is ugly and I created an issue about it:
