On our client‘s website, two separate Matomo properties/accounts are implemented. According to this support article (https://matomo.org/faq/how-to/how-do-i-send-tracking-requests-to-two-or-more-matomo-servers/), those two Matomo property are loaded via one joint tracking code, which is the following:
The cookie consent settings are also identical for both accounts, and no IP address filters have been set for either account. Therefore, it can be assumed that the tracked data should be approximately identical in those two Matomo accounts. However, the visitor count differs greatly, depending on the account. For instance in January 2025, about 250.000 website visitors were tracked in the first property, but only 175.000 in the second one. The number of standard events (downloads, outlinks, site searches) those visitors triggered also vary greatly. How is that possible?
One problem we are currently facing with our Matomo accounts is the server load. There is already work in progress in order to increase the server’s capacity, but currently error messages are often displayed when trying to load the Matomo backend, and the reports take a long time to load. Could this potentially influence the tracking of the visitors and therefore result in the deviating visitor counts in both Matomo accounts?
Thanks in advance for any helpful info/advice
