WP-Piwik 1.0.19 was not able to get sites with at least view access

I set-up Matomo from scratch on my new blog and everytime I get this error message:
"WP-Piwik 1.0.19 was not able to get sites with at least view access:"
I’ve completely reinstalled Matomo and created multiple users, to which I granted view access. Double checked the auth token, nothing helps.

Is this a common bug or problem? What can I try to solve this issue?

Now I changed the Piwik mode from “Self-hosted (PHP API)” to “Self-hosted (HTTP API, default)” and the error message changed to “WP-Piwik 1.0.19 was not able to connect to Piwik using your configuration. During connection the following error occured: malformed”

The debug script is what’s described here (I’m a developer, how do I enable logging (and / or SQL profiling) in Piwik? - Analytics Platform - Matomo) by “Enable logging in the Matomo (Piwik) UI”?

I Was able to get around the problem by inserting the tracking code in the apropriate field in my theme.
