Using Matomo to track engagement on capcut-edited video landing pages?

I run a small portfolio site where I upload landing pages for videos edited in capcut mac, mainly for clients and short-form content previews.

Recently I started looking into privacy-focused analytics instead of relying fully on Google Analytics, and Matomo caught my attention because of the self-hosting/privacy side.

What I’m trying to measure is:

  • how long visitors stay on a video page

  • which videos get the most interaction

  • download/button click tracking

  • traffic sources for shared video links

  • engagement differences between embedded videos vs direct exports

I was wondering if anyone here is already using Matomo for media-heavy or creator portfolio websites?

Also curious whether there are recommended plugins/settings for tracking video engagement more accurately without making the site heavy.

I would have a look at the media analytics plugin if you are on-premise this will give the best tracking of media on your site.

download/button click tracking

Downloads are tracked by default to track clicks you should have a look at events

traffic sources for shared video links

You should add campaign parameters to any links shared. This will give you good insight on where the click came from.

engagement differences between embedded videos vs direct exports

A custom report might be the best way to see these two metrics side by side.
