Upgrading Matomo 2.17.1 to Version 3

I would like to ask some suggestion, we are currently on Matomo 2.17.1 and we are planning to upgrade to the latest version Matomo 3.5.0.

Can I do upgrade from Matomo 2.17.1 to 3.5.0 directly? or I need to upgrade my motomo to a certain version 3.+.+ before upgrading to 3.5.0?

It should work directly. But we recommend to make a backup before, just in case something fails.
