Tracking PW-protected Site?

Hello,
will Matomo track Users on a Website with htaccess/passwd protection? Matomo is running on a seperate Server.
Thanks
MP

Hi @marine
As Matomo track client side with JavaScript, or pseudo-image, if your user access the site, then the track can happen.
Another way to track is the use of server logs. The same: if your user access the site, then the track can happen.

Hi Philippe,
Thank you for your quick reply. Maybe my question was not precise enough: Does the password protection interfere with the communication between the website and the remote matomo facility? Does Matomo need to access the website/must Matomo see it or not? Is it a one-way or two-way communication?
This is what it looks like:
our access to the password-protected website is not tracked in Matomo. The tracking code is correct, it works normally with other sites.
Sorry about my second question.

Marine

Hi @marine
Matomo can work on different ways:

  1. Server-side tracking: The website server sends tracking requests when some pages are reached or actions done. Matomo does not access to anything, as the tracking is done by the website server.
  2. More used, Log analysis: Matomo runs a python script to read HTTP logs of website server. The only access Matomo must have is the read of HTTP logs file.
  3. Even more used: Client-side tracking. The user browse your website, and during browsing, some JavaScripts (hosted in the website pages) are run form the user browser. Matomo does not access to anything, as the tracking is done by the user browser.
