I used to work without a SSL certificate in my site and I did not have problems of performance until I got it. IExplorer seems to work badly with this kind of merge (SSL and piwik) and it takes too much time to show a new page.
We’re making improvements to reduce the number of requests to the server when loading a page. That should help reduce latency in general, and in your case, where ssl incurs additional protocol overhead.
